What is Teeth Whitening?
Teeth whitening (or bleaching) is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the color of natural tooth enamel and is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile.
Having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients and there are a number of ways to whiten teeth.
Professional In-office
Usually takes about 1 to 2 hours for treatment. Completed by a dental care provider. Can be enhanced with a heat or light source to activate the whitening agent. High percentage of whitening agent.
Professional Take-home
Purchased at a dental office, higher percentage of whitening agent than OTC products, individual wears whitening trays at home, often for 30 minutes per application. Generally, takes 5 to 10 days to complete treatment.
Over-the-Counter (OTC)
Purchased at local drug store or grocery store, lower percentage of whitening agent than Professional Take-home, individual wears whitening trays/strips at home in same manner as Professional Take-home. Generally, takes longer to complete treatment than Professional Take-home.
Non-dental providers (mall kiosks, tanning salons)
Not recommended by dental professionals.
Teeth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to have the teeth evaluated by a dental professional prior to whitening. Teeth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed every several years, and more often if you smoke, drink coffee, tea, or wine.
